Off-subnet routing trap: do you know your MACs?

What happens to the Layer 2 frame when sending packets off-subnet? Drop your answer in the comments before the timer runs out!

The question

A host sends a packet off-subnet. What destination MAC address is placed in the Layer 2 frame?
  • ADefault gateway's MAC addresscorrect
  • BRemote destination's MAC address
  • CBroadcast MAC address

The answer

A Default gateway's MAC address

Right — the IP header keeps the remote destination, but the frame targets your gateway's MAC to leave the subnet. Don't fall for B; hosts never ARP for remote MACs. Follow for tomorrow's rep.

Exam tip

Read what the question is actually asking before looking at the options. The wrong answers here are ones candidates genuinely pick — each is true of something adjacent, just not of what was asked.
